  • New resident jeweller at Gray Street Workshop - Molly Gabbard (USA)

Posted on February 6, 2012 by sarahrothe

The start of the week and a fresh feel to Gray Street Workshop. Molly Gabbard is joining us for one year. She has been lucky enough to receive a Fulbright Postgrad. Scholarship. I am excited to see how she influences the studio dynamic and I'm always interested to see other people's working style.

Welcome Molly, I'm sure you'll be a wonderful addition to the little family that is GSW. Keep reading below for more information about Molly, what she hopes to get out of her time in Australia and her work.

    Molly Gabbard

“My materials and methods combine stone carving and mixed media, which result in a contemporary jewellery expression. Specifically, I am influenced by the unique characteristics in animals including; fur, scales, colouring, and even personalities.”

Molly Gabbard, a recent graduate from Indiana University, has won a Fulbright Scholarship to take a residency at Gray Street Workshop in Adelaide for a year. She will research the use of animals in Australian Indigenous art, endangered Australian wildlife, and study woodcarving with internationally renowned jeweller Catherine Truman, co-founder and current partner at Gray Street.

“I will initially utilize the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute Inc. and the Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery of the South Australian Museum to research the historical and current Indigenous use of animals in art,” Molly said.

She will also travel to Kangaroo Island in order to further observe and study the native wildlife in its natural habitat.

“Kangaroo Island retains more than half of its natural vegetation, is a declared conservation area, and sustains the thriving animal and bird populations such as the endangered Australian Sea Lion and the Glossy Black Cockatoo. Overall, I am intrigued by the colourings and textures of their feathers and fur coat, as well as traits for selecting a mate.”

Molly will combine her research of unique animal characteristics and indigenous art with woodcarving in order to expand on her ideas and methodology by creating a new body while a resident at Gray Street.

“Using wood as an alternative to stone will offer a range of possibilities for carving larger or delicate shapes that are either too difficult or impossible to create using marble or soapstones,” Molly said.

Molly has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design from Indiana University. She has won various awards and prizes including the Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design Area Award. Indiana University; The Dove Family Scholarship; Dean's List Indiana University. In her spare time she enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, spending time outdoors, and traveling. (interview taken from Fulbright website click here for more information).

  • Australian Designers - Look 1

Posted on December 8, 2011 by sarahrothe

Dames and Divas, Andie Meredith and I have put together collections of complimentary pieces, we are all Australian Designers whose work fits well within each others lines of fashion, design and jewellery. Here is look 1, based on a neutral colour selection of whites, silvers and blacks. More curated selections to come...

The All Eye Dress by Andie Meredith is made from bamboo jersey and is available in oyster (as pictured) or black and is such a gorgeous piece. Andie uses sustainable design practices  aimed at the individual in luxurious natural fibres, together with a high standard of quality and an ethical manufacturing practice.

Sarah Rothes’ ‘Twiggy Earrings’ are inspired by a research and development trip to China where the traditional art of paper cutting caught her eye.

Titanium is used to capture these designs while utilising the strength, hypoallergenic and lightweight properties of this amazing metal.

Detailed images are created using a chemical etching process, while the array of beautiful shimmering colours are achieved through an electrical process where voltage is used to colour titanium without dyes.

Dames & Divas Kimono Inspired Half Wedges - Kuro are the perfect accompaniment to the gorgeous look above.

These beautiful silk & suede half wedges are handcrafted from kimono inspired silk, suede & leather.

Designed by Dames & Divas the limited edition silk takes inspiration from yesteryear & is transformed into a beautiful range of ladies' shoes, bags, jewellery, scarves & accessories together with gents' ties, cravats, bow ties & cufflinks.

Dames & Divas half wedges are lightweight, comfortable and incredibly stylish.
